St. Mary's Community Hospital: Framing Art + Health

The Center for Health Design states, "There is a growing body of evidence that calls for the role of nature-based imagery in visual art to improve the patient and family experience through reduced stress, anxiety, pain perception, and improved perception of quality of care."

Art can make a significant difference in the healthcare experience; for the providers, the patients and the families that spend time in a hospital.

St. Mary's Community Hospital in Nebraska City, NE, a new 100,000 square foot facility, called on the services of Kurt Johnson Photography to provide a complete framed art package for nearly every interior of the hospital.

From the moment you walk in the front doors, your eyes are drawn to the soothing indigenous photography illustrating the beauty of Nebraska's rolling hills, architecture, plants and animals.

CEO Dan Kelly shared,

"This was a magical part of the project. From the first glimpse of the images in the binder, to when we met and agreed on the approach, to seeing all the pictures hung, and hearing the constant stream of wonderful comments, it was magical from start to finish.

"We were confident we'd done good things architecturally and I determined we needed something to send the project over the top. Kurt's pictures accomplished that in a way that exceeded my expectations. The imagery chosen and how it is presented promotes a sense of inner peace, which is so very important in a place that can be as threatening as a hospital."

Kurt was able to provide a full service experience to St. Mary's Hospital. From the initial concept meetings, budgeting and image selection, through to the framing, placement, and final architectural photography of the space.

The success of the art was made clear at a recent visit to the hospital when a nurse told me, "I get so many comments on the photography that I started keeping a stack of his cards at the nurse station."
